Music on the Brain

Link between Music Lessons and IQ

Recent research at the University of  Munster, Germany and the University of Konstanz, has demonstrated that participation in music rewires the brain’s neural circuits.  Through Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) researchers have been able to link the effects of music practice to cortex development.

At the University of Toronto, participants were given IQ tests prior to attending first grade and then again at the end of first grade.  The students who received piano or voice lessons during the school year scored approximately 39 percent higher on IQ tests at the end of the school year.  The University of California, Irvine researchers found that providing piano keyboard training to elementary school children raised their math and fractions test scores by 27 percent.  The National Association for Music Education in 2001 reported that high school students who had had music coursework and performance scored 57 points higher on the verbal section of the SAT and 41 points higher on the math section.

Music enhances brain development through improved coordination, the ability to learn and interpret new symbolic language, and the mechanics of multiple actions performed simultaneously.  Playing a musical instrument can literally give children higher IQ’s and better functioning brains!
