There's an App for That
What's that song?  SoundHound is the World's fastest music identification app that "listens" to music you sing, hum, or play near the mic.  The software uses sound to sound searching to achieve startling recognition of songs, and provides you with the title, artist, and even lyrics.  Once it has identified the song, you can choose to bookmark it for later, share with friends via email or social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, or buy it immediately through iTunes. You can also browse other songs by the same artist, view similar artists, or open a Pandora music station. The video below demonstrates SoundHound's music identification features.  (Can't see the video? View it in a browser.)

The application can be purchased for $4.99 through the iPhone App Store, or more information can be found at www.sound-hound.com.  For Blackberry, Android, Windows, or Nokia users, check out www.shazam.com, an app with similar features.

Tip of the Month

Bow Bugs!

Most string players know what they are, even if they don't know that entomologists call them dermestids, members of the Dermestidae family of beetles. Different members of the family prefer different forms of protein: hair, cellulose, wool, even hide glue. These little critters are largely responsible for munching on bow hair, resulting in hairs that are loose or randomly broken.  Since they don't like light, you'll primarily find them in cases that have been stored unopened for long periods of time.

If you suspect bow bugs have taken up residence in your case, whether from broken bow hair or evidence of their casings (shedded exoskeletons roughly a millimeter and a half long, and kind of a dusky reddish brown color), you can get rid of them by following a few simple but important steps. First, remove the instrument and bow and check them carefully for any trace of the creatures. Next, if you plan to use and not store the bow, have it rehaired. While the case is empty, vacuum it thoroughly, using a narrow crevice nozzle to get into every nook and cranny. Then leave the case open in strong (though not direct) sunlight for a few days. In most cases, these actions will solve the problem; if not, it may be time to get a new case.

Other staff members will be performing with church and community groups during the concert season as well.  Be sure to support your community musicians by attending a performance!
