The production of print music consumes a lot of the earth’s resources. In an effort to conserve and recycle, Alfred Publishing has launched “Alfred Cares,” a multi-pronged approach to a corporate green initiative.
Alfred now prints 95 percent of its music books on 100% recycled paper and the remaining 5 percent on partially recycled paper. Additionally, their CD and DVD covers are being changed to contain less plastic. Waterless urinals have replaced standard models, their warehouse now uses a computerized voice picking system rather than the standard paper system, and existing lighting is being replaced by energy saving fixtures.
Influenced by Mayfair Music, who prints on paper which is partially recycled and partially produced from sustainable forest pulp, Alfred hopes that others will follow their lead. They are willing to share information on the production switch, including costs and sources, in hopes that many others in the music industry will join them in Going Green.

One of the more exciting periods in every string player's education is the introduction to vibrato. We've seen the more advanced players create the beautifully rich tones with vibrato, but we just can't seem to figure out which muscles to twitch or which joint to wiggle without sliding all over the fingerboard or feeling glued in place, but we know we're going to keeping trying until we get it right. One easy way to take the frustration out of the learning curve is to take the practice off of the instrument.
Simply get a film canister and fill it halfway with dry, uncooked rice. (A shaker or any object that is around 2" in length and rattles when you shake it will work as well.)
Place the canister between your thumb and middle and ring fingers in your left hand with your thumb on the bottom and your middle and ring fingers on the cap, then raise your left arm to playing position.
Wave your left hand as though you're waving at your face and listen for the rice to shake back and forth.
Increase your waving speed and reduce the size of the wave as you feel more comfortable with the motion. Eventually the rattling from the rice container will become one continuous "shhhh" sound rather than discrete "shh shh shh" sounds. This is what you want to achieve.
Make sure to stay as relaxed as possible throughout the exercise.
Practice as often as you can, such as while watching tv or riding the bus to school. This will also help you learn how to vibrato when you can't give it all of your attention, such as during difficult passages in your music.
