Food Drive to Benefit St. Mary's Food Bank

It has been a difficult year for many people as well as many charities. This year, St. Mary’s Food Bank has had more than double the requests for assistance than in years past, but donations are down significantly. The Food Bank provides both food and other services to any person in need.

In the spirit of the holidays, the staff of The Music Store is spearheading a food drive for St. Mary’s Food Bank. If you are able, we hope you will help us make the holidays better for those in need by dropping off a non-perishable food item for the Food Bank when you shop with us. We thank you for your generosity.

Tip of the Month

Make One-of-a-Kind Christmas Cookies & Table Centerpieces

Swedish Lace Cookies

Ingredients:
  • ¼ cup butter
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ¾ cup quick oatmeal
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 2 tablespoons light cream
Directions:
Melt butter. Add all other ingredients. Cook until just bubbly, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Drop rounded teaspoonfuls 4 inches apart on well-greased baking sheet. Flatten slightly with spoon. Bake four at a time in a 375 degree oven on middle rack for 5 to 6 minutes or until brown around the edges. Cool for 2 minutes before removing from pan. Turn small tumbler upside down and drape cookie over the glass. Let cool. Carefully remove cookie. Invert and fill with your choice of berries and whipped cream. Makes twelve 5-inch cookies.
Swedish Lace Cookie
Citrus Pomanders Citrus Pomanders
(Carved Fruit Centerpiece)

What you need:
  • Fresh oranges, lemons, and limes
  • Pencil
  • Whole Cloves
  • Linoleum Cutter (available at craft & discount stores)
  • Fresh Evergreens
  • Cinnamon Sticks
Directions:
Choose the desired piece of fruit. With a pencil, mark a dot where you want to carve the stars on the fruit. Using the linoleum cutter and cutting away from yourself, make a star by carving an x at the dot and then make another line through the center of the x, forming a star. Continue making stars randomly on the pieces of fruit. Push a whole clove in the center of star. Place several pieces of fruit in a clear glass bowl with cinnamon sticks and fresh greens. This centerpiece will stay fresh for approximately three days.
These and other fun holiday tips can be found in the book "Christmas: Make It Sparkle" by Carol Field Dahlstrom from Brave Ink Press.

Staff in the Spotlight
Emily Crask joined the staff of The Music Store in early October. She has been playing classical piano since 1985, completing the Arizona Study Program in 9 instead of the prescribed 12 years and has a vast knowledge of piano literature, able to assist in selecting music for different levels. She was also in the high school marching band (on the drum line!), and has participated in musical (and non-musical) theatre. In addition to classical piano, Emily learned the fine arts of ballet, tap, and jazz at a very young age, has taught ballroom dancing and goes swing dancing regularly. Her musical taste is diverse and sometimes amusing, having grown up on Dean Martin, Perry Como and Frank Sinatra; not to mention Dire Straits, SuperTramp, the Beach Boys, and let's not forget 80's hair metal...

She will always do her best to help you pick out just the right piece!
