New World Symphony Center

Irish Music for St. Paddy's Day

San Francisco Symphony music director Michael Tilson Thomas, and Architect Frank Gehry have teamed up to design and build the New World Symphony Center. A Miami-based orchestra and academy that provides up to three years of seasoning for young musicians, the center is intended to take classical music and “launch it powerfully into the world.” The design will bring the 756 seats in the auditorium closer to musicians and provide nine high definition video camera feeds for projection on a 7,000 square feet wall which will be visible in the adjacent park. Rehearsal rooms are web-connected to provide video-conference style classes from instructors around the world. -Time Magazine February 13, 2011 Since everyone's Irish on St. Paddy's day, for the month of March, we're offering all Irish sheet music at 25% off when you bring in the coupon.E-Club Members Exlusive Coupon

There's an App for That

Magic Fiddle for iPad

With Magic Fiddle, you learn to bow, pluck, trill, vibrato and glissandi directly from your iPad. Follow streams of colored light to the correct notes and rack up points as you go. 32 play-along songs are included with the app, with others available for download. This app is available from the iTunes App Store for $2.99. (Editors note: this app does not "play" the song for you; you actually have to hit the right notes and notes can be played sharp, flat, or in tune based on where your finger lands on the screen! If you listen to the video, you'll hear out-of-tune notes, which adds a challenge above that of games like "RockBand" where the controller has only a few buttons to select for a range of tones. However, this app differs from a real violin in that you cannot play an open string and only 3 strings are represented.)

Music Videos

We found a great clip of The Corrs, a Celtic Folk Rock band, performing a traditional Irish tune, "Toss the Feathers," live for this month's video. We hope you like it as much as we did. (Can't see the video? View it in a browser.)
