Future of School Music Programs
& Music Lessons
The 2010 Census showed that the State of Arizona led the nation in the increase in population in the under-18-year-old category, with a 29.95 percent increase in school age children. This shift in demographics and population will have a major impact on school music programs nationwide according to the May issue of the Music Trades article, “Where the Kids Are”.
“Ultimately, the size and growth rate of the school population has a big influence on the size of music programs”, and private lessons as well. Census projections indicate that while the western states have had enormous growth in school age children over the last 5 years, that expansion is likely to slow in the next 5. As parents and teachers, we must work to keep our state’s children involved in music by encouraging our schools to maintain music programs.
