School Guitar Programs
"Proponents of school guitar programs have argued for years that school music is far of a zero-sum game. By tapping a pool of students who otherwise wouldn't have played an instrument at all, they say, adding a guitar program expands the overall "pie" of music students rather than taking a slice out of band, orchestra, or chorus. [The argument is] that the student who plays cello in the orchestra is not necessarily the same one who wants to start a rock band."
"Glen McCarthy, a professor at George Mason University, conducted a study which provides some numerical backup for the argument in favor of guitar in the schools." McCarthy's data from 25 schools in Fairfax County, Virginia, indicates that when guitar programs were added, band, orchestra, and chorus numbers taken together remained stable while total music numbers, (including guitar classes) rose from just over to 9,000 to over 12,000 in just three years. "Student enrollment data provides tangible evidence that guitar programs increase total participation in music programs and don't sabotage band and orchestra." (Taken from May 2011 issue of Music Trades). |
New Lesson Studio for The Music Store

The first instructor at the new campus will be bassist and percussionist Byron Lipkins, also a former band director. To schedule lesson times or get more information, contact the instructor at byronlipkins@the-music-store.com or call (480) 831-9691.
